In desperate need of new, modern motive power, C.M. Darden, Superintendent of Mechanics for the NC&StL Railway, and his team spent months designing and drafting a new class of steam locomotive at their offices in downtown Nashville. They placed their order for the new engines with the American Locomotive Company, who Darden had worked for as a draftsman early in his career. Another year of final design and construction led to the first 10 J-3 Class locomotives, Nos. 570-579, rolling out of ALCO's Schenectady plant in August of 1942. No. 579 is seen here in a company builder's photo looking brand new without a speck of dirt. Soon it will head south to Nashville to begin revenue service. The broad yellow striping running down the length of the locomotive led the crews to christen these engines as "Yellow Jackets." #80for80 ... See MoreSee Less
