Nashville Steam has discovered unexpected deterioration in several of steam locomotive No. 576’s superheater units, requiring a custom mill run of new material costing roughly $45,000.

To keep the restoration on schedule following the locomotive’s successful hydrostatic test — its first in more than 70 years — the organization has launched an end-of-year Matching Campaign, with all donations doubled up to $25,000.
